Altus Groups Workzone Digitisation promises a new era of roadworker safety, operational excellence and environment performance. This transformative approach represent us taking a significant leap forward in our industry's quest for safer roads and highways. This innovative approach harnesses cutting edge technology, sophisticated software, sensors, alarms and data analytics to provide real time monitoring and risk management for workers operating on our roads.

Traditionally, resources such as personnel, equipment and infrastructure have been coordinated manually, with supervision of sites conducted in situ, leaving potential incidents to be addressed, only after they’ve been observed. Workzone Digitisation changes this paradigm by  transforming operational data into a continuous, automated, and actionable format, benefiting multiple stakeholders.

Our innovative approach enables passive assets to become smart, providing real-time performance measurements and allowing for the implementation of if/then logic to address the common challenges in traditional workflows.

Key features include instant warning systems for workzone incursions, reduced labour requirements in certain traffic management scenarios, and advanced intervention based on evolving risk factors.

The MyWorkzone software application governs device monitoring and reactions, offering real-time insights, alarms, notifications, and historical data for complete transparency over site performance.

Key Components that make up the Workzone Digitisation system are:

Creates a digital twin of all traffic management assets, allowing for continuous monitoring and instant alerts whenever an asset is compromised or displaced.

Real-time alerts and visual warnings are activated when cones are struck or moved. This ensures traffic controllers have maximum response time to relocate to safety.

This lidar-based laser system creates virtual barriers, deterring unauthorised access around no-go zones, ensuring that drivers respect work zone boundaries.

These alarms notify traffic controllers and workers in case of unauthorised entry or threatening situations within the workzone, enabling rapid responses to developing risk.

In addition to enhancing safety and productivity, Workzone Digitisation offers environmental benefits, supports contextual risk planning, provides evidentiary support for site operations, maintains site integrity, and reduces reliance on foot traffic.

Our ethos is ‘simplicity and safely’, hence all of our digital equipment is deployable by a single person. Where possible we make existing equipment smart to ensure road personnel and traffic controllers are not at risk any longer than necessary.

Intellitag

Originally introduced as an innovative digital add-on to the Workzone Digitisation suite (IPAWS system) by HRS, Intellitag was designed to enhance the monitoring of safety-critical work zone assets. However, as we refined and tested this technology, we discovered that Intellitag had far-reaching applications that warranted its own spotlight.

Intellitag works by creating a digital twin of your traffic management assets—whether it’s road signs, cones, or barriers. This digital twin is monitored continuously, providing instant alerts whenever an asset is compromised, such as a fallen sign or a displaced cone. This shifts the focus from routine visual inspections to event-based maintenance, freeing up your team to focus on more critical tasks.

Benefits:

  • Monitoring sites remotely reduces cost and the site’s carbon footprint, and allows more efficient use of human resources.

  • Enables customisable status updates and trigger events (tilt/falls), reducing risk to road users.

Intellitop Cone Sensors

The Intellitop Cone Sensor is a state-of-the-art safety device designed to improve road safety by integrating GPS tracking, impact and tilt detection and wireless communication.

The Intellitop is installed in the top of a standard traffic cone and provides real-time alerts around cone strikes/breaches to the Portable Site Alarms (PSAs) which are located in the work zone.  Intellitop cone sensors are used at full closure points or longitudinal cone lines (i.e. lane closures).

Benefits:

  1. Warning the Workforce: Instant alerts are provided to the workforce whenever a cone is struck or has been knocked beyond 45 degree’s, ensuring immediate awareness and response.

  2. Deterring Errant Vehicles: The system is equipped to deter errant vehicles and capture evidence of any breach. This is essential for legal and safety reasons, providing a clear record of incidents and ensuring compliance with road safety regulations.

The Intellitop cone sensors are an indispensable component of Altus Traffic's workzone digitisation system, providing a robust foundation for enhancing safety and operational efficiency. By integrating these advanced sensors, Altus Traffic is able to offer a comprehensive, tech-driven solution to managing temporary workzones that minimises risks and maximises control. This technology not only streamlines workflow but also ensures that every aspect of workzone management is monitored and optimised for safety

Sentry Laser Detector

Sentry laser detectors are cutting-edge devices designed to monitor and protect workzones. These units use lidar laser technology to create virtual barriers around a designated area. The Sentry Laser has been designed to detect people and vehicles and communicates wirelessly with the Portable Site Alarm.

When an object or person breaches this laser, the system immediately triggers an alert to the Portable Site Alarm, warning workers to take immediate action and to move out of harms way.

Sentry Lasers are typically used to detect errant vehicles or pedestrians entering a workzone. They can also be used as a standalone device to form an exclusion zone around heavy plant or machinery.

Portable Site Alarm

Portable site alarms (PSA’s) are situated within the workzone, so they are always within seeing or hearing distance from all crews on site.

The PSA is triggered by any breach of a Sentry laser detector, or a cone sensor during a cone strike. The PSA provides immediate audio and visual alerts to work crews, notifying them of the potential danger allowing them to take swift action and move out of harm's way.

Benefits:

  • Instantly warns the workforce in case of a workzone breach, helping them avoid harm (Red Alarm)

  • Instant (customisable) alerts to the workforce for non-life-threatening events, such as access by emergency services and/or controlled vehicles to improve safety and efficiency (Blue Alarm)

  • Removes traffic controllers from areas of potential harm and redeploys them to more value-adding activities.

  • Generates deployment and breach data enabling data-lead continuous improvement
